A Denver native, Megan discovered her passion for photography at a very young age. Introduced to photography utilizing her father’s 70s era Nikon film cameras, some of which she still owns today, Megan fully embraced the medium. Finding inspiration through her father’s own hobby in photography, she eventually developed her own eye capturing everything from photojournalism to architecture, urban landscapes to the mountains and eventually the eastern plains of Colorado and beyond.
She was attending CU Boulder and largely failing at university life when her photography professor encouraged her to focus on her craft and pushed for her to enroll at the Colorado Institute of Art. Megan fully embraced the art school journey, learning and perfecting skills in large format and studio imaging as well as dark room techniques with a heavy emphasis on black and white. She ultimately graduated in 1996 with a major in photography and a minor in photojournalism.
Photography has been an incredibly spiritual outlet for Megan and it has been something she has relied on to get her through some of the most rewarding and challenging times of her life. It’s her one constant. Her one means of escape.
Having had the opportunity to solo backpack through Europe shortly after a life-changing event, Megan developed a heavy appreciation and a much stronger eye for landscapes, architecture and people while fully entrenching herself in a multitude of cultures. Buying a one-way ticket, she went with the intention of experiencing the world, to do it at her pace and to accomplish all of it without a timeline or an itinerary. During her three months stint, she captured some of her most inspiring images to date so after returning to Denver, she decided to create Megan Self Photography. A straight forward, open book (of sorts), sneak peek into her visionary creations and what truly feeds her soul.
Today, Megan continues to travel, capturing images and improving upon her craft in fine art photography. She is also expanding her base to include real estate photography thanks in large part to her late mentor, biggest influence, loudest cheerleader, unapologetic critic and dear friend David McGrath.
Thank you for supporting Megan’s passion by exploring this journey through her, mostly, monochrome lens.
